# Damage check-in for small vehicle rental fleets

Damage check-in for small vehicle rental fleets is a SaaS idea for small car, van and campervan rental companies with 5 to 100 vehicles, priced to test at $4 per vehicle a month. Damage disputes come down to paper diagrams and blurry photos on a staff phone. With it, staff photograph each vehicle at pickup and return from set angles, and both sides sign, so damage disputes come with evidence.

## What problem does it solve?

Damage disputes come down to paper diagrams and blurry photos on a staff phone. Owners pay for repairs they can’t prove, or argue with customers who swear the scratch was already there.

**Why now:** Phone cameras take clear evidence, and small fleets compete with big rental brands on trust.

## What do they use today?

Most small fleets hand over keys with a paper form and a quick walk round the vehicle. If there is a dispute later, someone searches a drawer of forms or a staff member’s camera roll.

## How does it work?

At pickup a staff member follows the guided flow for that vehicle type and photographs each set angle. On return, staff repeat the same angles and the pickup and return photos appear side by side, so any new mark stands out. The customer signs on the phone and gets a damage report by email, and the check stays in that vehicle’s history.

## What goes in the first version?

- A guided photo flow with set angles per vehicle type
- Pickup and return photos side by side
- The customer signs on the phone
- A damage report emailed to the customer
- A history per vehicle

## Who pays, and how much?

- **Who pays:** Small car, van and campervan rental companies with 5 to 100 vehicles
- **Price to test:** $4 per vehicle a month

A price per vehicle grows only as the fleet does, so a small rental firm pays for what it actually runs. Owners already count costs per vehicle, from insurance to servicing, so this line looks familiar.

## How to test it in 7 days

1. Call ten local rental companies and ask how they record damage.
2. Read reviews of small rental companies for damage disputes.
3. Run check-ins for a week at one friendly company.

## Where to find the first customers

- Independent rental owner associations
- Campervan rental groups on Facebook
- Insurance brokers who cover rental fleets

## What are the risks?

- Rental software suites may include inspections.
- Photos in bad light are weak evidence, so the flow must guide each angle.

## How to build it on shipanysaas

4 of the parts it needs are already in the kit, the phone app with the All-in plan. Get the kit, open it in Claude Code, Codex or Cursor, and paste the starting prompt.

**Already in the kit:** Teams and roles, Billing, Emails, Phone app with All-in

**You build:**

- Guided photo capture by angle
- Side-by-side comparison
- Signed damage reports

### The starting prompt

```text
You are in a fresh copy of the shipanysaas starter kit, a pnpm and Turborepo monorepo: the Next.js web app is in apps/web and the Supabase database, with its migrations, in apps/web/supabase; with the All-in plan, the Expo phone app is in apps/native. Help me build the first version of Damage check-in for small vehicle rental fleets.
Read AGENTS.md first, then the AGENTS.md in every folder you work in: the kit's rules there win over your defaults. When a skill in .agents/skills (also in .claude/skills and .cursor/skills) matches a task, use it.
## The product
- What it does: Staff photograph each vehicle at pickup and return from set angles, and both sides sign, so damage disputes come with evidence.
- Who pays: Small car, van and campervan rental companies with 5 to 100 vehicles
- Their problem: Damage disputes come down to paper diagrams and blurry photos on a staff phone. Owners pay for repairs they can’t prove, or argue with customers who swear the scratch was already there.
- Price to test: $4 per vehicle a month (a plan in apps/web/config/billing.config.ts)
## Build only this first version
1. A guided photo flow with set angles per vehicle type
2. Pickup and return photos side by side
3. The customer signs on the phone
4. A damage report emailed to the customer
5. A history per vehicle
## Already in the kit: reuse it, never rebuild it
- Teams and roles: team accounts with members, roles and invitations
- Billing: Stripe or Lemon Squeezy subscriptions, per seat or usage-based, and one-off payments
- Emails: transactional email through Resend or Nodemailer
- Phone app: an iPhone, iPad and Android app on the same backend (All-in plan)
## New code it needs
- Guided photo capture by angle
- Side-by-side comparison
- Signed damage reports
## How to work
1. Plan first: list the database tables (with row-level security, so each team only sees its own rows), the pages and the server actions for the first feature. Then stop and wait for my OK.
2. Build one feature at a time with the kit's own UI and form components, with a migration for every schema change and user-facing text in the translation files.
3. After each feature, run the verification steps in AGENTS.md, fix what they find, and tell me what you built and what comes next.
## Rules
- Ask me before you add a dependency, delete a file, or change sign-in, billing or the admin panel.
- Leave the parts of the kit this product doesn't use as they are.
- If apps/native is not in your copy (the Starter plan), build the web app only.
Done when every first-version feature works for a signed-in team and the AGENTS.md checks pass.
